Have you ever been to a social event, and just didn’t know what to say or how to approach people?
I went through a time in my life where I had a problem with this.
But I used 3 tips to really work the room.
They work at any type of events where you don’t know many people, like an office function or cocktail party…
1. Seek Common Ground
Discussing how you’re connected to the event or the host is an easy way to make someone you’ve never met open up and feel comfortable around you.
I really like this one.
It is an easy way to start conversation and get to know another person.
From there you can relax and get more comfortable with each other.
2. Pay A Compliment (Must Be A Real One)
If, for example, a woman you’ve been introduced to is wearing a bracelet you admire, tell her you like it – and WHY (the WHY is the important part).
This shows that you’re genuinely interested.
Follow up with “Where did you get it?” or “What is it made of?” to keep the conversation going.
Remember though, don’t get stuck on this topic of her bracelet. Be able to use this as an introduction and then transition into something else.
Don’t get stuck in your compliment.
3. Ask Specific Questions
One of the best conversation starters is “What keeps you busy outside work?”
Inquiring about someone’s career can dead-end, especially if the person has a boring job.
But asking about personal interests will get them talking and will reveal a lot about them.
NOTE: Every time that a woman/person gives you an answer: Listen, Confirm you’ve heard what they said and then comment on what you heard.
Don’t want you to get stuck in interview mode.
Conversation, is where connections and common ground can be found.
